South Dublin County Council is constructing a number of local walking and cycling routes to service local communities throughout the county. These will create more sustainable neighbourhoods with direct pedestrian and cyclist links to popular local destinations. The aim is to encourage people to leave the car at home for short trips by bringing more households within easy walking and cycling distances of local amenities.
Routes nearing completion including a walking and cycle route through Corkagh Park from Fonthill Road to Clondalkin Village that will link the communities of Cherrywood and St. John's to Clondalkin Village; and a route in Knocklyon linking communities from Templeroan to Knocklyon District Centre via Dargel Wood. There are a number of panned routes in the Lucan, Bawnogue, Deansrath, Tallaght, and Rathfarnham areas.
In many cases the proposed links are based on existing short cuts. The upgrades of these routes will enable cyclists and pedestrians, including those with decreased mobility to access safe, direct, hard surfaced routes to the local shops, schools, community centre bus , rail or Luas stop, cycle route or the park / playground.
Increasing the number of people walking and cycling within local communities reduces carbon footprints, encourages a healthier lifestyle and increases passive surveillance and in turn safety.
